The moment the wine hit Emily’s pregnant stomach, the ballroom went silent.
Not shocked.
Excited.
Because rich people love humiliation when it happens to someone they already decided doesn’t belong.
Emily stood motionless beneath the crystal chandeliers of the Blackwood Hotel, one hand resting protectively over her eight-month belly while red wine soaked through her dark blue dress.
Across from her, her ex-husband smiled.
Nathan looked perfect in his tailored tuxedo, with his glamorous fiancée pressed against his arm like jewelry.
“Oops,” the blonde woman laughed. “Guess cheap fabric stains easily.”
Several guests chuckled.
Emily said nothing.
That unsettled Nathan more than anger would have.
Two years ago, he destroyed her reputation after the divorce. Told everyone she was unstable. Too emotional. Too broken after losing their first baby.
Nobody knew she had secretly bought the hotel a month earlier.
Nathan raised his champagne glass. “Still chasing wealthy men, Emily?”
The baby kicked hard beneath her hand.
Alive.
Strong.
Enough to steady her.
The fiancée grabbed another glass and deliberately poured more wine down Emily’s dress.
A gasp spread through the ballroom.
Nathan actually applauded once.
“There,” he smirked. “Now you finally match the carpet.”
Emily slowly reached into her purse and made a call.
“Security director speaking.”
Her voice stayed calm.
“Please clear the ballroom.”
Nathan laughed loudly. “You can’t remove me from my own event.”
Emily finally looked directly at him.
“No,” she said softly. “But I can remove you from mine.”
The music stopped instantly.
Huge doors opened.
Security guards entered in a perfect line, walking past Nathan and stopping directly in front of Emily.
The head of security lowered his head respectfully.
“Good evening, Mrs. Carter.”
Nathan’s face lost all color.
Emily wiped wine from her wrist.
“I finalized ownership of this hotel three weeks ago,” she said quietly. “And I don’t tolerate people assaulting the owner.”
The room exploded with whispers.
Nathan stared at her in disbelief.
“Emily… don’t do this.”
She smiled coldly.
“Funny,” she whispered. “That’s exactly what I begged you the night you left me alone at the hospital.”
Then she turned to security.
“Escort them out.”
A pause.
“And ban them permanently.”
For the first time in years, Nathan looked afraid.
